Organizational Policies and Practices to Support Healthcare Issues.

Organizational Policies and Practices to Support Healthcare Issues.,Discussion: Organizational Policies and Practices to Support Healthcare Issues Quite often, nurse leaders are faced with ethical dilemmas, such as those associated with choices between competing needs and limited resources. Resources are finite, and competition for those resources occurs daily in all organizations. For example, the use of 12-hour shifts has been a strategy to retain nurses. Organizational Policies and Practices to Support Healthcare Issues.,However, evidence suggests that as nurses work more hours in a shift, they commit more errors. How do effective leaders find a balance between the needs of the organization and the needs of ensuring quality, effective, and safe patient care? In this Discussion, you will reflect on a national healthcare issue and examine how competing needs may impact the development of polices to address that issue. To Prepare: Review the Resources and think about the national healthcare issue/stressor you previously selected for study in Module 1. Reflect on the competing needs in healthcare delivery as they pertain to the national healthcare issue/stressor you previously examined. By Day 3 of Week 3 Post an explanation of how competing needs, such as the needs of the workforce, resources, and patients, may impact the development of policy. Then, describe any specific competing needs that may impact the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected. What are the impacts, and how might policy address these competing needs? Be specific and provide examples. Learning Resources Required Readings American Nurses Association. (2015). Code of ethics for nurses with interpretive statements. Silver Spring, MD: Author. Baltimore, MD: Author. all work MUST BE IN APAFORMAT, ,Competing Healthcare Interests and the Impact of Policy on the Same,As much as the healthcare industry accommodates entrepreneurship, it is also tightly regulated and has its own fair share of competing interests. One of these is the need for financial gain (profits) pitted against the interest of patient data security. The latter could potentially compromise patient safety when patients’ medical records are accessed by unauthorised persons. This competing interest necessitates the enactment of policy that will require substantial financial output to implement. This short discussion examines the competing interests of patient data security and profitability in the context of healthcare organizations.,The shift of healthcare institutions to the use of electronic health records (EHR) has come with the need for cybersecurity. This is because cybercriminals have found ways of breaching organizational systems and stealing patient data which they can then sell or use to blackmail the patients. This puts the security and safety of the patients at risk (Martin et al., 2017; Kruse et al., 2017; Le Bris & El Asri, 2016). In order to come up with cybersecurity protocols, each of the healthcare organizations must come up with policy directives and strategies to be implemented. The implementation of these policies requires that the management of the organizations sets aside funds for the expensive project of installing cybersecurity systems. It is therefore clear that the national healthcare stressor of cybersecurity is impacted by the two competing needs of patient safety and security on one hand, and the need for profitability and coverage of operational costs on the other. The impact is that funds that may have been used to improve services, recruit more staff, and purchase more equipment is diverted to the purchase of cybersecurity systems and updating of the same (Kruse et al., 2017; Le Bris & El Asri, 2016). Policy such as setting aside educational expense for staff training on cybersecurity by experts is one way that this issue can be addressed by policy measures.Organizational Policies and Practices to Support Healthcare Issues.,In conclusion, cybersecurity is an important national threat to all healthcare organizations because of the inevitable use of electronic health records. It is however impacted by competing needs such as the need to operate profitably and the need to ensure patient data and information is safe.,Competing Healthcare Interests and the Impact of Policy on the Same,The healthcare industry just like any other industry that is regulated but which also which accommodates entrepreneurship has its own fair share of competing interests. For instance, nurses are professionals who are guided by professional nursing code of conduct and standards of practice (ANA, 2015). These ensure that nurses are always professional and offer the best holistic quality patient care (Kelly & Porr, 2018; Milliken, 2018). However, nurses are also human beings with families and require to be remunerated well. They also have a limit of physical effort and get tired. At the same time, the organization must also break even and make some profit to remain afloat. Thus some of the competing needs in healthcare are nursing staff welfare, patients’ need for quality nursing care, and organizational obligation to meet the bottom line.Organizational Policies and Practices to Support Healthcare Issues.,One particular national healthcare issue or stressor that is impacted by competing needs is high nurse turnover. The issue of high nursing staff turnover is impacted by the competing interests of nurses’ need for a conducive work environment devoid of stress and the patients’ need and right to receive the best possible quality nursing care. An imbalance between these two in favor of the patients leads to high turnover. Some of the impacts of this situation inevitably are nurse burnout and workplace incivility/ violence. A stressful working environment coupled with a heavy workload leads to nurses leaving their jobs to search for better working conditions and better remuneration. Policy might address this particular situation by for instance pegging reimbursement on the quality of healthcare services provided. This will force organizations to look into the welfare of nurses well so that they can participate in providing nothing but the best of patient care. For example, this is already being achieved by the pay-for-performance policy of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (James, 2012).   Organizational Policies and Practices to Support Healthcare Issues.
