Chronic diseases include cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, type II diabetes, chronic kidney failure, and more. These diseases are the leading cause of mortality in our society. These largely preventable diseases affect our quality of life, economy, and communities. As the population grows and ages, the burden of chronic diseases in the health care system has become unsustainable.
These diseases can be prevented without a doctor prescribing preventive medicine, which usually comes with a high cost and many more secondary effects on the patient already at risk, but instead by adopting a healthy diet and a lifestyle change. Risk Factors for Chronic Disease come from Smoking, an Unbalanced Diet, and a sedentary lifestyle set up at a young age.
The most economical and effective way to reduce the risk of chronic diseases is the implementation of a healthy lifestyle. Chronic diseases and poverty have a direct relation and constitute a vicious circle. The poorest are also the most likely to suffer from chronic illness because they live in bad conditions and have little access to education, healthcare, and proper nutrition.
The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases requires rethinking the allocation of resources. So, we can reallocate some of the resources allocated to tertiary care to increase access to the prevention of chronic diseases, for example, help with smoking cessation counseling and wellness programs.
These prevention programs would be very profitable ways to make considerable savings to the extent that they reduce expensive emergency room costs.
